Tweeting It Up At The Masters 2012

Well the time has finally arrived for a tradition unlike any other, The Masters. It’s also the time where we get to see which PGA pros participating in the Masters have jumped on the bandwagon and joined Twitter. As we pointed out this time last year, 41% of the 99 players in the 2011 Masters field were using Twitter.

So let’s take a look at where the Masters field has come over the past year. Out of the 97 players in the field this year, 59% are now using Twitter with over 8,000,000 followers. The 2011 field had just over 4,000,000 followers.

By number of followers, Tiger Woods has jumped into the top spot. He is also the first PGA golfer to cross the 2,000,000 follower mark. Ian Poulter and Stewart Cink, one and two in last year’s report, round out the two and three spot each with over 1,000,000 followers.

If we look at the number of tweets, Bubba Watson is still the biggest tweeter, but let’s welcome Trevor Immelman to the party. He is the only new name in this year’s list of top ten tweeters.

Chart2

Tiger Woods is currently ranked #7 in the world but he is ranked #1 when comparing the number of followers per tweet.

Chart3

Rory McIlroy may have blown a four-stroke lead in last year’s Master’s but since then; he has picked up the 2nd largest following on Twitter.

Chart4

Here is a list of players that are either new to Twitter in the past year or did not participate in the Masters last year. Darren Clarke, from Northern Ireland takes the top of the list.

Chart5

Will having a twitter handle improve one of these guys play on Sunday? No. But it does give them the opportunity to communicate with their fans and be a greater asset to their sponsors. Stewart Cink, one of the PGA twitter pioneers, keeps a list of all the sticks in his bag on his twitter profile.

Eight out of the top ten golfers in the world are currently using Twitter. It is clear that players took note of early adopters such as Stewart Cink and Ian Poulter and the fan relationship they were able to build through this platform.  If you want to give them or any of the guys in the Masters field a follow – we have their Twitter accounts below.

YouTube Yesterday: Staying the Same

Viewers went from everything new to familiarity yesterday. If eight of the top ten most watched videos in politics seem familiar, it’s because they were also on the list in the last edition of YouTube Yesterday. Will this new-to-old pattern continue tomorrow? Stay tuned.

USA Today: Online political ads aimed at specific audience

Targeted Victory was featured in a new article from USA Today yesterday about the changing nature of campaign advertising. Political campaigns, such as the candidates running for the 2012 presidential race, are increasing their usage of online advertising to target specific audiences by using “cookie trails,” ZIP codes, search engine terms and locating mobile devices in certain areas.

Check out the article and tell us what you think.
